This space is for those who want to make sure they are not forgotten in the building process of their home town Smart Community project. Its a bit of everything for everyone. The content is Linux. The concept is the following: Using the OpenSource "movement" "philosophy" (or whatever you want to call it) to create a "better place" (Better than being there!) for you and I. This space is being built with the bazaar style in mind. Its purpose is to help each other to sensibilize our Governments, Businesses, and Authority figures about Smart Communities. Our focus is the OPENSOURCE use whenever and wherever possible. We're not geeks or "career hackers". We just like to go under the hood of our OS. Here are the 12 areas of interest we investigate, collaborate, promote and live for:
(Note that the above links have been re-worked so that they lead to an automated blog solution – Jan. 06)
Each subject of interest has a "general e-mail account" already set up A_N_D all going toward one main address. As one member (or a group for this matter) volunteers to tackle on one subject, the email traffic is forwarde toward their web site. If you have any questions regarding our endeavour, here are some contacts:
If you would like someone to call you back, please reach our secretary Beatriz Alcina . (obiously, this is only possible within our jurisdiction at the moment. WebTelephony is not accessible at the moment. But bear with us, one day it will come. In the meantime, we have a Real Paper Newsletter available. Just let Beatriz know what is your subject of interrest, etc...
We're preparing a Community Television program and _h_o_p_e_ _t_o_ _g_e_t_ _i_t_ _b_r_o_a_d_c_a_s_t_e_d_ _o_n_ _t_h_e_ _I_n_t_e_r_n_e_t_!!! If this is of interrest to you, let us know let us know
Here is a definition of what is a Smart Community:
"A community that has made a conscious effort to
employ information technology to transform a
major portion of its region. This transformation is
beneficial to the community and attracts local
participation and cooperation among the
community, government, industry, and education.
SmartCommunities improve its citizens' lifestyles
by increasing mobility (lessening the burden on
the physical transportation infrastructure) and
reducing environmental pollutants. Citizens also
experience increased control over the demands
placed upon their lives from the convenience
offered by a community -wide information
infrastructure. SmartCommunities are also
economically competitive in the new global
economy and attracts commerce as a result of
an advanced telecommunications infrastructure."

Now this space is about collaborating and providing services.
It (that is ourselves, the "LinuxCyberCommunity" group) provides Information to all its members and visitors about the concept and vision of Smart Communities by publishing a newsletter. If you wish to receive our news letter, please join the ONElist mail-list.
We all heard of "Portals", "Data Mining" and all of these hi-tech, hi-touch search engines. Our strenght is that we rely on other's technology but we add a personal touch. Something that machines, artificial intelligent devices don't and will _n_e_v_e_r_ _h_a_v_e_! Why, because we're interractive. Even proactive with feelings and intuition. Now, show me the machine that can do that.
Many, if not all are asking if this endeavour is about money. The answer is simple: Its more than that. This Inter-Network Village is about "W E A L T H", not just commerce. . That is where we innovate.
This group is meant to grow organically, change and adapt as any Open entity would. Nothing is static. The only thing that doesn't change is change itself: It always changes, improves. Yet, its process is simple. It promotes the job of the future. Here is a typical "contract" to explain this unique principle. The client complains her/his web site does not do what its suppose to do. There comes our group of experts:
a) First, we gather information about any of the 12 areas of interrests mentionned above and look at the client's web site with "different sets of eyes". We then identify where the VAR (Value Added Reseller) may be for this contract and ask for a quote, a recommendation, a plan.
b) Second, we empliment the changes after the proposition has been approved.
And so we carry on.
The International nature of our Inter-Network - Linux Cyber Community, whatever you want to call it is about Linux. Our purpose is to promote the OpenSource technology. With Open standards in mind we can't go wrong. Can we?
Here is a list of the projects under work:
There are no other projects undergoing at the moment.
>>>>>>>>>>>> Except, of course, the original one<<<<<<<<<
Here is a breif history on how this project has become an idea which time has come:
The idea of a common space with
shared values and interest emerged back in
October 1998. Since
then, friends mostly located in Kingston Ontario, Canada
got
together to share a dream. What dream? The vision of having a
membership
used for the purpose of collaborating and competing
at the same time under
the same "roof". The original
concept was to start a "Linux Group".
The common language used is English. And if someone wishes
to send a "broadcasts"
in French or Spanish, its OK.
Translation can be provided for those who wish.
The idea is to use this momentum newly acquired by the Linux movement as a
Political Jump (TKS to Mr. Steve ; - ) for the shared ideas... but not
a "vicious Political point of view" to make a statement. And that statement is:
a) The world belongs to the simple ones, the creative people,
the artists, etc. It is driven by ordinary people who, together are more than the sum of their parts. This space is the living proof that the intellectuals of our society are at the service of the simple minded, almost naïve. Just like Linus Torvald's story where his openness allowed the Hackers around the world
(with the support of the Free Softwarte Foundation, GNU... etc) to
contribute in the creation of a stable, open source operating system.
b) Almost all causes are welcomed as opposed to the Linux
newsgroups where the "Oldfarts" are ruling. In the hackerdom, the rules of Linux User Groups can be rather harsh. In order to be "In" you've got to behave. No commercials or outside issues are allowed. No advertising for any causes are permitted. I'm personnaly fed up of apologising to those who don't apologise
back! But beware, this is not a religious gathering or pure political
space where one person can "convert" the others. It is simply an idea which is time has come. ITS YOUR SPACE MORE THEN MINE. ITS OUR SPACE FIRST.
c) Free is good. But eventually, one must earn a livng ....
one must be financially comfortable. So the idea of money is not the first objective AND their is nothing wrong with getting sponsors to pay for products and services
they need and want. Services and products constructed on the principle and concept of: "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" so well written by Eric S. Raymond. But in a much much larger sense. That is the Creation of an Intelligent City. Like
PLATO envisionned it... and more.
d) To collect P_L_E_D_G_E_S. Lots of them. How, by joining a mail-list service.
e) Their are no dummy questions here. Please send constructive
critisim to any one of us. We will make sure everybody gets it
4) We admit that alone we can't do it. How many times did I failed to get to this point of no returns? Too much is too much. I've had it. This endeavour goes in all directions! On one hand, there is the point of view of the observer who watches the parade going by. And on the other hand, there is the one who t_r_u_l_y wishes to make a difference. And the place where to make that difference is H E R E!

Our mission is simple in part because we are still in our infancy, having been in existance for only a short while. We are also simple by design. Why? Because most good ideas are simple in nature. There is a certain strenght about ourselves that endures time and space. We allow change to take place. So our idea is simple. To create, with integrity, something bigger than ourselves that is a reflection of our common values. We think it's an idea which times has come. An idea that will not only endure, but over time, will grow.
